Thiruvananthapuram:Kerala Governtment does not wish to enter into a conflict with the public over the sale of liquor, said Minister G Sudhakaran.“The government does not have any agreement with the liquor vends. Nobody has sought my assistance to relocate shops. However, in the past, the scenario was different,” he noted. “The government will not resort to any tactics to escape the verdict. No state highways will be re-notified,” he said “However, the current situation will result in large-scale production of illicit liquor,” he cautioned. “No liquor vends will be opened near places of worship or populated areas. In this regard, the responsibility lies on the local governing bodies, not the Excise department,” he said. “In no way, the LDF government is encouraging liquor consumption. No liquor shops are extending an invitation to the public,” he said. Sudhakaran further said the government would seek three months’ time to implement the Supreme Court order banning sale of liquor near highways. In this regard, the government will file an appeal in Supreme Court on Monday, he said.
