Dr. George D. Cherayil July 30th, 2014 Age 85 years. Beloved husband of the late Gracy. Dear father of Dr. Greeta (Thomas Hofbauer) Cherayil, Dr. George Jr. (Jeanne Marquette), and Dr. Gerald (Dr. Kimberly) Cherayil. Proud grandpa of Charles Hofbauer, and Emma, Ethan, and Sarah Cherayil. George was also survived by many relatives and dear friends. He came from India after getting his masters degree and coauthoring a chemistry text book with his brother. He received a Fulbright Scholarship to Saint Louis University where he received his PH.D in Biochemistry, under the tutelage of Edward Doisy, the nobel prize winning scientist. He then moved to Milwaukee in 1962 to work at the Marquette Medical College, which later became the Medical College of Wisconsin. He worked there for 29 years, researching Multiple Sclerosis as well as Alzheimer's Disease. After retirement he kept busy with numerous activities including helping his family and participating in Indian community events. In his later years he devoted himself to care for his beloved wife, Gracy, whom he spent virtually every day with until her death in 2010 after 53 years of marriage. He was a devout Catholic and family man. George was one of the first immigrants from Kerala, South India to settle in Southeastern WI. He and his wife helped many families from Kerala get established in the community.
