A 47-year-old senior officer with horticulture department here allegedly committed suicide at his residence, police said today.

Guruzada Srinivasa Rao, working as senior assistant director with East Godavari's Rajahmundry Horticulture department, hanged himself from a ceiling fan at his AV Appa Rao colony residence here last night, Deputy Superintendent of Police K Muralikrishna, Prakasha Nagar police station, said.

Rao, reportedly the great-grand son of noted Telugu writer Gurazada Appa Rao, had recently been transferred to Kakinada.
